Rail sits between sea and air on both axes: noticeably faster than a vessel, considerably cheaper than a plane. Trains run from terminals in Xi'an, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Wuhan through Kazakhstan and Belarus to Małaszewicze on the Polish border, where the cargo transfers to European gauge and continues by road or rail.
It works best for goods where the value per kilogram is high enough that six weeks of capital tied up at sea starts to hurt, but not so high that air freight pays for itself. Electronics, tooling, mid-range consumer goods and seasonal stock that would otherwise miss its window all fit that description.
Capacity is the variable to watch. The corridor has fewer slots than the ocean lanes, so in peak periods rail can be booked out or repriced sharply, and geopolitical disruption on the route has real operational consequences. Ask about current transit reliability, not just the headline transit time.

What to watch for
- Not every commodity is accepted. Restrictions on dangerous goods and on some liquids are tighter than at sea.
- Temperature. The route crosses continental winters, and goods sensitive to frost need that raised before booking, not after.
- Capacity and pricing swing with demand on the corridor more sharply than ocean rates do.
- Transit time is quoted terminal to terminal. Pickup, clearance and final delivery sit outside it.
